A priority of the NSW Department of Education and Training is to ensure that full access to information is available to all parents, carers and school community members.

Interpreting and translation services are provided for parents and carers who do not speak or understand English well and for deaf parents and carers who use sign language.

Interpreting services are provided at the request of a parent/carer or school for matters involving children such as school enrolment, subject choice, educational progress, attendance, welfare or behaviour. Interpreters can also be requested for school meetings, School Council meetings, Parents and Citizens meetings or parent-teacher interviews. Parents/carers and schools don't have to pay for these services.

Parents and carers who don't speak English well can get assistance from the Telephone Interpreter Service to contact their school. The telephone number to ring is 131 450. Ask for an interpreter in the required language and the interpreter will call the school and stay on the line to assist you with your conversation. You will not be charged for this service.

Information in translation is also available from Make Links Use Interpreters.

The NSW Department of Education and Training also provides a large number of publications translated in up to 30 languages.

NOTE: Information for schools on Interpreter and Translation Services is available on the Department's Intranet.
