Who was chosen as the email service provider for student email?

Google was chosen as the email service provider for NSW public school and TAFE students as the result of a tender process.

Who can have a Google student email account?

All NSW DET school and TAFE students have been provided with a Google email account. There may be exceptions for students under the age of 18 whose parents or care-givers have notified the school or TAFE Institute/College that they do not wish their child to have an email account.

Can students use an existing private Gmail account for their school email?

No. The DET-provided Google account is customised for students and only accessible through the DET Student Portal.

How do students access their email accounts?

Students access their DET email accounts via the DET Student Portal, using their individual username (DET User ID) and password to login.

What is the minimum mailbox size for the student 'My Email' account?

The minimum mailbox size is 7GB.

Where do students go if they need help?

Students can access support materials when they log in to their email account, by clicking on the "Help" link.

What if students need help using their email account when they are at home?

Students can access support materials at any time and from any location via a link on the DET Student Portal.

How can students find out what their email address is?

Student's email addresses appear at the top of the main email display page.

Can students attach files to an email? What is the maximum message size?

Yes, students can attach files to an email. The maximum message size including attachments is 20MB, however it is not recommended that students send messages larger than 5MB as they often cannot be received by other email systems.

Can students add their picture to their email profile?

Students can add a picture to their email profile but it will be invisible to others. This is to conform to DET policy which stipulates that students will not reveal personal information, including photographs of themselves or others.

Can students use their email to submit their work?

Yes. Students can use their email to submit work to their teachers.

Is student email monitored or filtered?

Yes. Student email is filtered and monitored. A copy of all emails sent and received by students will be kept by DET.

Are students able to use other features like Instant Messaging and Google Apps in their Google email accounts?

No, other features associated with Google such as Instant Messaging have not been enabled at this time.

How can students find staff email addresses?

Staff members will have to provide their email addresses to students. Students do not have access to the Global Address List (GAL), containing staff email addresses, from the Student Email system.

Are teachers able to view the contents of student mailboxes?

No. Teachers cannot view the contents of student mailboxes, however the stored copy of email messages may be accessed by authorised staff for investigative purposes.

Who can see student email addresses?

Staff can see email addresses of students at their school via the Global Address List (GAL) from the Staff Email system.
