Animals in schools: Animal welfare guidelines for teachers (known as the Guidelines) interprets the legislation that determines the use of animals in schools. All teachers that use animals for educational purposes must comply with these guidelines.

A full copy of the Guidelines can be viewed or downloaded at Resources: Guidelines.

The Guidelines are divided into Parts A, B and C.

Part A contains general information about legislation, activities that may be carried out, categories of activities, the roles and responsibilities of people who use animals for educational purposes, issues that may arise while using animals and application forms.

Part B is also known as the species-specific notes. Each section of this part presents information about physical and behavioural needs, suggested resources and approved activities for each of the listed species.

Part C presents eight case studies. Each case study presents a scenario that describes a decision-making process that a teacher would need to work through in order to decide whether the use of an animal is completely justified under the Animal Research Act 1985 (NSW).

During 2001 Parts A and C of these Guidelines were distributed to all schools. In 2002 Part B (the species-specific notes) were distributed, providing teachers with the complete document.

Early in 2005 a package of amendments to the Guidelines were distributed to schools. These amendments included:
  • replacement for pages 41-48, Part A, Appendices 2-5
  • additional pages for Part B, species-specific notes for Australian native animals.
