The Department of Primary Industries (DPI) produces forms, fact sheets and pamphlets about animal welfare. These are published at Animal Welfare Publications.
The DPI also produces standard operating procedures (SOPs) for a range of procedures carried out to cattle, pigs, sheep and poultry. The SOPs that are available cover a wide range of procedures including artificial insemination, castration, tail docking, vaccinating, detusking, fat scoring and euthanasia.
While these SOPs have been written to provide direction to all officers of the NSW DPI and Rural Lands Protection Boards who carry out teaching, extension and research activities involving animals, they may be used by teachers in schools to provide assurance that their activities are planned and carried out to appropriate standards. At times, the Schools Animal Care and Ethics Committee (SACEC) may refer to them when considering applications by teachers to carry out particular activities.
