These species notes provide information about the animals which are considered suitable for use in schools and are commonly used for teaching and demonstration purposes. These notes provide information and guidance about the care and handling of those animals. They are written on the assumption that teachers have some familiarity with, or knowledge of, the animals included. Teachers are encouraged to seek additional information about the species they use and a list of suggested resources is included for each species.

The activities described in the notes are those that the Schools Animal Care and Ethics Committee (SACEC) considers to be the most appropriate for the species or that require some specific advice.
