Taryn was a member of the Gold Medal winning Australian Water Polo Team at the Sydney Olympic Games. She had been a member of the team since 1992 and in that time competed in four World Cups and three World Championships.

Taryn started playing water polo when she was 13 years old at Fort Street High School, along with fellow student and former Australian water polo goalie Liz Weekes.

Taryn comes from a family of Olympians. Her father, David Woods competed at the 1972 and 1976 Olympic Games and younger brother Gavin competed in the men's Australian Water polo team at the 2000 Olympics in Sydney.
