Competitions

The 2009 Connected Learning Awards provide students with an opportunity to engage with real-life situations and develop skills including communication, collaboration and self-directed learning. There are five award categories: Digital Story; Short Film; Digital Art, Learning Resource and Greeting Card Design.

With the exception of the digital art category, these awards are open to students in NSW DET schools only.

The Critics' Choice invites young people to critique ten anti-smoking advertisements from around the world. Students are asked to grade the advertisements and nominate the one that is most effective in making them not want to smoke.

Each year students across NSW have the opportunity to enter state-wide public speaking and debating competitions. The Performing Arts Unit, which organises the competitions for NSW primary and secondary school students, also conducts training and development courses for staff and students.

 
Premier's Debating Challenge

The NSW Student Representative Council (NSW SRC) invites secondary schools to showcase their successful student-led environment projects. Create a five minute DVD or video to showcase your school environment project.

 
Enviro Inspiro! 2009

A challenging competition for environmentally aware Year 11 students. Each government high school may enter one team of four Year 11 students in this statewide competition. Schools compete in regional events in order to win a place in the state finals held in the Kuringai Chase National Park.

Each year the NSW Department of Education and Training conducts the Multicultural Perspectives Public Speaking Competition for Years 3 and 4 Years 5 and 6 students attending NSW government schools.

Side by Side, the newspaper for NSW public schools, is running a student news competition for NSW government schools. All NSW public schools are encouraged to get their competition entries in for the best student newspaper, class newsletter or news website before October 23.

 
SIDE by SIDE - Student newspaper competition

Each year a number of state-wide competitions in the performing and creative arts give students across NSW the opportunity to compete against other. Students who form their own bands and write original material have the chance, through the YouthRock competition, to gain financial and logistic support from the music industry.
