Creating your web site

Planning

The first step in creating a web site is to think about the audience for the web site. Who are they? How will they access the web site?

Before building the individual web pages it is important to plan the site as a whole. Use a large piece of paper. This will ensure that all team members have a sound understanding of the structure of the web site and allow for a co-ordinated approach to its creation. Having the site on a piece of paper also means that it is easier to check when individual pages have been completed or make any necessary changes to the site.

Building

The next step is to choose the tools or applications to create the web site. A graphics program and an HTML editor will be needed to complete this task.

As part of the Microsoft licensing agreement with the NSW Department of Education and Training, all schools received copies of Frontpage and Image Composer.

There is no obligation to use these applications, and teams may choose to use any available commercial package. There are also a large number of suitable freeware and shareware programs that can be found on the Internet, e.g. http://www.shareware.com or http://tucows.com

Reviewing and refining

The completed site should be viewed on both Macintosh and Windows-based computers, and on major browsers, such as Netscape and Internet Explorer.

Netscape can be downloaded from http://www.netscape.com/download/ while Internet Explorer can be downloaded from Microsoft's Internet Explorer home page, located at http://www.microsoft.com/ie/default.asp

It is a good idea to review the web site on a different computer. Using another computer ensures that all links work and that all graphics have been uploaded correctly.

Uploading the site

Once the site is completed, and the Principal has approved the site, it can then be uploaded.

All sites entered in the competition must be uploaded to the competition area. It is strongly suggested the the web site is also uploaded to the school web site so other people can view the work the students have created. Instructions on how to upload the web site will be forward via e-mail to school and teacher e-mail addresses once teams have registered.
