Intensive English Centres (IECs) and the Intensive English High School (IEHS) provide intensive English as a Second Language (ESL) tuition to recently arrived, high school aged students whose first language is not English. In addition to ESL tuition, the IECs and the IEHS provide orientation, settlement and welfare programs to prepare students for learning in a NSW government high school and to participate in Australian society.

Newly arrived students from language backgrounds other than English who present for enrolment in high school should be referred to the local IEC/IEHS for assessment and possible enrolment. In certain cases, newly arrived LBOTE students who are Year 6 aged may also be referred to their local IEC/IEHS for assessment and possible enrolment. On completion of their IEC/IEHS course, Year 6 aged students must transfer from the IEC or IEHS to Year 7 in high school.

There are 14 Intensive English Centres (IECs) and one Intensive English High School (IEHS) (pdf 17kb) located in metropolitan Sydney and Wollongong.
