ESSA was introduced by the NSW state government to raise the profile of science education and to provide diagnostic information about science learning by students in NSW government schools.
Teachers are actively engaged in professional learning around ESSA. They are:
- using data from ESSA, in addition to the valuable information collected within schools, to monitor and improve teaching and learning programs in science
- contributing to ESSA tests as item writers, markers and developers of materials for ‘Curriculum Links’
- participating in workshops provided by the ESSA team that investigate the design, results and implications of tests. For more information, non-government schools can download the 2009 workshop package (80 kb pdf). For DET schools, additional information available from the ESSA webpages on the DET intranet and the DET Professional Learning Exchange.
The ESSA team is presenting information about the program in a variety of forums, such as educational conferences, science education publications, collaborations with tertiary institutions and departmental briefings.
