1.         Secondary students living away from home allowance (LAFHA)

This allowance is a State Government allowance administered by the NSW Department of Education and Training. The allowance is reviewed yearly, in 2008 the allowance is valued at $1,197 per annum, paid in two semester payments of $598.50 each, with an additional $281 per year available if the student is in Year 11 or 12 and are geographically isolated.

LAFHA is subject to a means test, the adjusted family taxable income for the year ending 30 June 2007 can not exceed $50,478.

2.         Boarding Scholarships for Isolated Students (BSIS)

This scheme (BSIS) will replace over time the two existing NSW secondary student scholarship schemes for students who are disadvantaged by a combination of low income and geographic isolation. These scholarships could be available to eligible families who meet strict criteria related to isolation and economic circumstances and will be valued at $4,000 each.

The Agricultural High School Boarder Scholarships (AHSBS) will continue to be available to current scholarship holders only. This scholarship is replaced by the new BSIS.

The Access Scholarships for Isolated Students (ASIS) will continue to be paid to current scholarship holders only. This scholarship is replaced by the new BSIS.

3.         Assistance for isolated children scheme (AIC)

AIC is a Commonwealth Government scheme that targets students who do not have reasonable daily access to an appropriate government school because the family home is geographically isolated. Information about this scheme is contained in a brochure published by Centrelink. The brochure and application forms are available from all Centrelink offices or you may wish to telephone 132 318. Intending applicants are also reminded that in addition to geographic isolation, the brochure lists special circumstances which might contribute to the student's isolation.

In addition, students may be able to obtain assistance from Youth Allowance (phone 132 490) or ABSTUDY (phone 132 317), both of which are administered by the Commonwealth.

Access scholarships for isolated students (ASIS)

The Access Scholarships for Isolated Students scheme has been established to assist students in Years 9 to 12 from rural areas who are disadvantaged by a low family income, and; who wish to attend a NSW government specialist secondary school in order to pursue a special talent, interest or educational need, and would need to board away from home to do so; or who must board at a school term hostel to access a government secondary school.

General conditions of eligibility

a.    Students must meet the means test requirements for the NSW Living Away From Home Allowance (LAFHA).

b.    Students must be attending a government secondary school.

c.    Students must be in Years 9, 10, 11 or 12.

d.    Students must have a special talent, need or strong vocational interest that requires them to attend a specialist secondary school, or students must be in circumstances where they have to board at a school term hostel to access a government secondary school.

e.    Applicants must submit an application form by the due date and supply all necessary supporting documents.

There are forty scholarships offered annually with a value of $1560.

Renewal of application

Application need only be renewed if there is a change of circumstances. It is the responsibility of the scholarship holder to notify the Manager, Distance Education of any change. Continuing recipients will be required to complete an income review form to check current eligibility.
