The Educational Measurement and School Accountability Directorate is responsible for:

  • Ensuring that NSW is a world leader in the design and employment of effective testing programs and school accountability models
  • Developing and managing national literacy and numeracy, and state wide science assessments, and meaningfully reporting results
  • Training school based, regional and state office staff to analyse outcomes, monitor achievement and track progress over time to establish learning needs and areas for program support
  • Managing the selection and placement of Year 7 students into selective high schools and Year 5 students into opportunity classes
  • Establishing rigorous, progressive self-evaluation processes consistent with the school accountability and improvement model (DET INTRANET users,  also see Framework for School Development and Accountability)
  • Providing policy support and assistance to regions in the organisation and conduct of education support teams, school program reviews and management reviews
  • Providing systemic data and measurement advice to the Commonwealth Government concerning national minimum standards
  • Equipping schools with best practice mechanisms to promote effective teaching and learning
