The Basic Skills Test (BST) was administered to all Year 3 and Year 5 students in government schools and interested non-government schools in NSW.
The BST program provided students, teachers and parents with information about what students knew and could do in the areas of literacy and numeracy.

The assessment

BST is a curriculum-based assessment, testing students' knowledge and skills in particular aspects of literacy and numeracy.
In Literacy, BST assessed writing, reading, grammar and punctuation and in Numeracy, BST assessed the following aspects: Number, Patterns and Algebra, Data, Measurement, Space and Geometry.
