Where the sun rises... is a unit of work about Japan and is designed for use by Stage 1 teachers. A booklet of images complements the unit and supports teachers with appropriate images and information. A class set of the images booklets were included in the distribution package to all government and Access Asia schools.

The unit is based on outcomes of the K-6 Syllabus in Human Society and Its Environment. Some of the indicators may be found in the teachers booklet. The use of images is encouraged to create indicators that illustrate the outcomes and to look for other indicators in the work of their students.

This unit is based around Penrith Lakes and looks at the changes over time in this area. The activities are linked to an historically-based fiction story for the children called Tessa's Story. The storyline involves a girl who is given a project at school to choose a family heritage item and write about its story. This requires the girl to talk to her family and find out where she has come from.
The activities have a significant emphasis on the environment and the use of maps and photographs, which are provided on a coloured broadsheet (in a class set). The resource is a model for looking at heritage in the local area.

Talking Identity

Talking identity: an Aboriginal perspective is a unit of work about identity and has been designed to meet Stage 2 outcomes in the K-6 Syllabus in Human Society and Its Environment Syllabus. Two accompanying texts Rak Niwili and The Fat and juicy place as well as a Rak Niwili audio tape, are also included in the kit.
Throughout the unit emphasis has been placed on community consultation and participation. Following local community protocol will ensure the success of the unit. The unit consists of ten topics, each containing a teaching program, student worksheets and teacher overheads. A Teacher's notes and background information section provides the teacher with a basic understanding of the content and addresses the issues of consultation and protocol with Aboriginal communities.

Celebrating together provides opportunities for students to explore the cultural diversity of communities within Australia and the world through the study of celebrations. It incorporates family, community, national, international, cultural and religious celebrations and how these reflect the values and beliefs of a particular group. It aims to develop intercultural understandings and examines the issues of prejudice and racism. Students are also given opportunities to clarify, apply and evaluate their own attitudes and values as citizens of a multicultural society.

By word of mouth offers information on the use of oral history as a classroom device, providing suggestions on preparing students as interviewers: how to be good listeners and ask thoughtful questions, gaining a perspective of the past through recollection of others.

The resource, Sites and scenes, provides both the stimulus and resource material for students to research particular heritage sites. Students are expected to conduct research on the CD-ROM and produce an investigative report on the particular site.

The resource provides a series of windows into Australian society, both past and present, by way of studies of people, events and ideas. These studies focus on, and are referred to, the outcome and subject matter of Stage 3 in the HSIE K-6 syllabus.

The rationale is that many people, events and ideas are known but their religious background and motivation are not. The studies recognise the religious convictions of people that led to decisions, actions and activities that have affected other Australians. The book is available online.

Sydney Airport models an outcomes approach to programming. It provides a basis for assessing students' achievements of outcomes within the context of learning experiences.

The unit demonstrates how teachers can incorporate HSIE skills and content within a range of classroom content. It provides a range of student experiences that can be undertaken by a whole class, in small groups or by individuals.

Talkin' language
