A fair go for all is designed to assist schools in effective teaching and learning about positive relationships and personal safety. It is a set of materials for students from Kindergarten to Year 10.

The range of resources, while not exhaustive, has been selected from the most relevant of recent and currently available materials. Fiction has been included in response to requests from teachers wanting to use literature as a medium for the delivery of drug education as part of the PDHPE and English syllabuses.

It introduces twelve fundamental movement skills. These skills are considered to be essential if students are to participate successfully in the many physical activities, games and sports offered in our community.

Participation in a safe environment provides opportunities for students to enjoy the experience of physical activity, to develop skills, interact socially and achieve personal goals. This document will assist schools promote quality participation in physical activity through safe and enjoyable activities.

Guidelines for the safe conduct of sport and physical activity in schools has been produced to inform and support school communities in the planning and implementation of safe sport and physical activity. It draws together advice from current NSW Department of Education memoranda which has an impact on the supervision and welfare of students engaged in physical activity, and strengthens existing safety guidelines and standards for specific sport and outdoor recreation activities. It also describes best practice in injury prevention.

The guidelines contained in this document can be applied for any occasion where planned physical activity is to occur. This includes activity undertaken as part of the school sport or Personal Development, Health and Physical Education programs and excursions.

The content strands from PDHPE which relate specifically to drug education and provide students with knowledge, attitudes and skills that will enable them to understand the harms associated with drug use are:

This resource suggests activities to assist students to work towards achieving the outcomes of the PDHPE syllbus.

The units of work are divived into a series of lessons. The activities within the lessons may need to be modified according to the needs and interests of students and school community. They may be taught as discrete units, or lessons from them may be integrated into existing lessons or units of work.

Road safety education resources for Stage 1, Stage 2 and Stage 3. Each pack contains a teacher resource booklet, which lists teaching and learning experiences that are further supported by audio tapes for shared books, a video tape and photographs.

This road safety education resource consists of three resource packs, one for each learning stage in primary school. Each pack contains a teacher resource booklet which provides learning experiences based on the student outcomes of the Board of Studies K-6 Syllabus.

Over recent years there has been widespread community concern about the incidence of eating disorders among adolescent girls, and more recently, boys. This concern is not just focused on those young people who develop the clinically diagnosed disorders of anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa, but extends to a much wider group of young people who engage in behaviours such as excessive dieting and exercise which prevent them from leading healthy lives.

This resource provides teachers with a series of teaching and learning activities which they incorporate into Stage 3 programs. This document has been designed to complement the NSW Board of Studies' syllabuses in PDHPE from Kindergarten to Year 12. It takes the concept of the health promoting school outlined in the syllabuses and elaborates on ideas for implementing this concept in schools.

Smokescreen: A smoking prevention resource
|
|
In response to concerns about youth smoking, the New South Wales Department of Education and Training has developed Smoke screen: a smoking prevention resource. The resource supports the NSW Personal Development, Health and Physical Education K-6 and Years 7-10 Syllabuses and has been distributed to all NSW government schools.

As smoking is generally adopted during the early to mid-teens, the late primary and early secondary school years are clearly a crucial time for intervention. For this reason the resource targets Stage 3 (Years 5-6) and Stage 4 (Years 7-8).
|
|
Smoke screen aims to provide young people with knowledge relating to the effects of smoking and the skills to advocate against smoking. The resource also assists students to critically examine marketing strategies. Particular attention is given to product placement in movies / television and cigarette packaging used to recruit young people, especially females.

The resource includes activities addressing three themes. These themes are:

Physical consequences of smoking
Classroom activities in this theme address facts on tobacco, addiction and the contents of a cigarette.
|
|
Attitudes to smoking
In this theme students examine tobacco-marketing strategies and practise refusal skills.
Advocating against smoking
These activities focus on the costs of smoking, advocacy strategies, developing their own anti-smoking campaigns and using appropriate refusal techniques.
