Funding is no longer available to support drug education forums.
However, schools are in a unique position of sharing an interest and responsibility for the wellbeing of young people with local sporting, recreational, cultural, and religious and other community groups.
Collaborative drug education initiatives provide opportunities to:
- discuss and develop community wide approaches to local drug-related issues
- build resilience in young people
- build connections between young people and their local community
- share information about drugs and their effects
- build capacity for individuals and communities to access help
- enhance partnerships with the wider school community
- discuss school policies and programs.
There are a wide range of initiatives schools can employ that contribute to preventing drug related harm.
Drug education initiatives include:
- classroom activities which provide opportunities for students to access factual information about drugs and develop skills within a safe and supportive environment What works? What doesn't work? (Intranet links)
- whole school initiatives which promote good health such as expos, performances and presentations addressing health and drug issues
- activities which build connectedness with other students, teachers and the community such as building websites, developing theatre productions, photographic displays, journal and newsletter articles and musical items
- activities to engage students, teachers and the wider community, reinforcing consistent health messages for young people by participating in health promotion activities that link to events such as World No Tobacco Day, National Youth Tobacco Free Day.
