Linking with Technological & Applied Studies (TAS) Key Learning Area

Environmental education can be incorporated into the TAS curriculum as either a focus area of study or through incidental treatment within broader areas of study that draw out environmental issues.

The Design and Technology course provides an ideal vehicle for the integration of environmental education and as a means for using environmental issues as a focus for the teaching units. This is equally true for Stages 4, 5 and 6 of the curriculum.

Some ideas on how environmental education can be addressed within the context of Design and Technology are outlined below.

Context Area
Stages 4 & 5
Strategies
Design Briefs which focus on:
Agriculture
  • problems associated with soil erosion and salinity.
  • the redesign and improvement of school spaces in order to create effective Learnscapes.

Built Environment
  • creation of bio-diverse areas within the school (possible links to Science and HSIE - ecosystems).
  • energy efficient housing design.

Clothing and Accessories
  • use of alternate fabrics and environmentally friendly fibres.
  • development and implementation of recycling systems within the school.

Engineered Systems
  • development of simple mechanisms to aid in recycling e.g. aluminium cans crusher, paper bailer.
  • design and development of a promotion strategy for World Environment Day or similar celebration.

Information and Communication
  • communication of a whole school environmental initiative e.g. power consumption or recycling.

Preliminary Course
HSC Course
  • the preliminary course offers a broad scope for Design Projects that focus on the areas outlined in the Stage 4 and 5 courses to be dealt with.
  • provides opportunities for students to pursue MDPs that deal with environmental issues and problems.

It should be noted that Design and Technology Syllabuses Stages 4 - 6 require the treatment of environmental issues in all context areas and design projects to a varying degree.

More examples and ideas for the TAS Key Learning Area can be found in the document supporting the Environmental Education Policy for Schools.
