English as a Second Language (ESL) education is provided in primary schools, high schools, schools for specific purposes, Intensive English Centres and the Intensive English High School, to support the English language development of students whose first language is not English. In these schools ESL programs are delivered in a variety of ways to meet the different needs of ESL students at different stages of learning English.

ESL teaching focuses on students learning English in the context of the curriculum they are studying so that they acquire the English language skills relevant to the subject area. Students may receive support from a specialist ESL teacher working with a class teacher or they may be in a separate group for some classes.

ESL support is provided through two linked programs: the ESL Targeted Support Program and the ESL New Arrivals Program. For more information, refer to English as a Second Language Programs in Schools.
