The NSW State Literacy Strategy Evaluation has been released by the NSW Premier Bob Carr and the Minister for Education and Training, Dr Andrew Refshauge.
The evaluation provides recommendations for consideration in setting strategic directions in literacy for the next five years.
The major findings of the evaluation include:
- Student literacy achievements have improved
- Teacher knowledge and skills to explicitly teach literacy have been enhanced
- Schools have adopted a whole school approach to planning for literacy improvement
- Links between primary and secondary schools have improved
- Student literacy levels have been accurately assessed
- Students with literacy problems have been identified and better supported
- Partnerships between teachers and parents to ensure literacy development have become more effective
- State and area offices have provided coordinated support, including policies, programs and consultancy, to assist teachers and schools.
