This is an exciting time for education in NSW as we get ready for the introduction of the new school leaving age in January.

The Rees Government has undertaken this major reform to give our students the best possible start by keeping them engaged in education longer.

The aim is to give students greater opportunities and choices when they leave school, whatever path they choose to pursue.

This is a major step forward in the education of our children and there will be significant benefits not just for them, but for all of us who live in NSW.

This is about enhancing opportunity by creating skilled and flexible generations who will be well equipped for the future.

The changes mean that from next year, all students in NSW will be required to complete Year 10.

In addition, if a student is under 17 and wants to leave school after Year 10, they will need to be in vocational training, an apprenticeship or paid employment for at least 25 hours a week.

We are very conscious of the need to make the subject choices and options attractive for students staying on longer at school.

There are many different avenues your child can take to secure their future and I encourage you to talk to your school about the choices available.
