Resources to help to your child plan

There are many great websites available, with information about job and study options - some with video footage for a bird's eye view of particular careers.

Here is a summary:
School to work

This site gives students, teachers, parents and carers easy access to advice on school subjects and career selection. School to work was developed by the NSW Department of Education and Training and has different sections for students, parents and teachers.

Parents can find information about career development, how they can help their children with career choices, the best places to find career information, advice on choosing school subjects and ideas about post-school options.

Students can find Logbook Online through the department's student portal. It's a great resource to help plan their future. Using a personalised logbook, students document the employment-related skills they learn at school and in the community, as well as collate careers information, and build and update resumes.

The site includes the Student Pathway Survey, a web-based survey designed to encourage students to reflect on and report their confidence on employment-related skills, goal-setting, part-time work, job choice, career information, pathway options, career and transition planning and intended school exit destination and timing. After finishing the survey students receive an instantaneous feedback report they can discuss with their parents.

There are great courses to study at TAFE

Study distance education through TAFE's Open Training and Education Network.

This resource, used widely in public schools, promotes role-playing and games-based vocational learning for students in Years 3 to 12 through five career exploration and life skills programs. Students have fun as they learn about life as an adult, exploring life roles in the context of their own career journey and life planning. Each game is an educational program with defined learning outcomes and performance indicators, presented in the form of a game.

Many students are still considering their options - or re-evaluating them, when they receive their HSC results in December, particularly if their Australian Tertiary Admission Rank is above or below expectations. It can be an exciting or confusing time. Each year the Department of Education and Training offers a free Careers Advisory Service to provide students, their families and carers with up-to-date information about career and study options. The service operates after the release of HSC results.

This site has support for HSC students, including study materials and interactive activities based on the syllabus for each HSC subject. There's a section on Beyond the HSC and parent information and tips.

Take a look at www.myfuture.edu.au, a national online careers resource featuring video guides, a personalised career exploration tool and fact sheets.

Many young people are after an "ace" day job so there is a website named just that where you can watch people in action at work.

Or watch hundreds of videos about getting a trade or skill at www.skillsone.com.au.

School-leavers can find the right job, make the right career choice, check out TAFE and university options.
