Chaydin Reid is a top rugby league player and now he's channelling his energies into the sporting ambitions of young students in his community.

The Year 11 student coaches a junior league team and teaches young students how to dance - and his all-round active lifestyle has given Chaydin a sense of the direction he'll take in his future career.

He's one of the many students discovering the opportunities available through a school-based traineeship.

"The course is focused on rugby league coaching, which I love, and when I've finished it will really help me get into the sports courses I want to do at university," says Chaydin.

"The course really confirmed to me that I made the right decision to stay at school."

In Year 9 Chaydin's sporting talent and leadership potential was spotted by the Girri Girri Sports Academy for Aboriginal students in western NSW.

The academy offered Chaydin a sports coaching traineeship, which will result in him gaining a Certificate II in Sports Coaching at the end of Year 12.

"I always wanted to do something with sport," he says.

"The course is great and it will allow me to continue to work with Aboriginal kids in sport in a school environment. Later in life, I want to either be a sports teacher or work for a group like Girri Girri."

Chaydin is developing a range of skills, such as coaching and leadership, and continues to shine at his favourite sport.

"Once a week I teach the Aboriginal students dance as part of the sports lesson, which has been great. I also help out the coach of the under 14s rugby league side, which is helping me put the things I'm learning into practice."

Already a veteran of rep football, Chaydin plays hooker for his successful local team, the Cowra Magpies. It's the business end of the season and the Magpies are heading into the grand final brimming with confidence.
