Leaving Year 10

By the end of Year 10 students will need to make a number of decisions about their next steps.

What are my options if I have completed the School Certificate?

First, you could search for a job. There's also the possibility of further study - immediately or in the future. You could continue at school to complete the Higher School Certificate, attend TAFE or a private college. Alternatively a combination of study and part-time work may be more suitable to achieve your goals.

When can a Year 10 student leave school following the School Certificate?

Students intending to continue into Senior School must attend until the final day of term four. Exceptions may be made at the discretion of the school principal. Students not returning to school may leave after the final School Certificate examination.

What is the minimum school leaving age?

The legal age is 15. If parents have a special case for their child to leave before the age of 15, they should contact the principal.

Getting advice

Even though hundreds of Year 10 students are faced with these questions and decisions each year, every situation is unique and based on your goals, interests and strengths. Be sure to get advice from your school careers adviser, parents, TAFE NSW or higher education body to help you consider the options.
