The first practical examinations for the 2008 HSC have begun with dance students performing their major works for examiners last month.
The acting NSW education minister, John Hatzistergos, who wished students “the very best of luck”, said the 659 female and 37 male dance students would be examined on a solo performance and a dance they had choreographed themselves.
After each performance the students would then be required to answer questions about their work.
“Dance students will also be examined on a major study in performance, composition or appreciation and will sit at least one written exam in October,” Mr Hatzistergos said.
The practical component of the exam can contribute up to 80 per cent of a dance student’s final examination mark, depending on the major study they undertake.
Other HSC subjects with practical examinations or major projects include drama, music, languages, visual arts, agriculture, English extension 2, design and technology, industrial technology, textiles and design, and society and culture.
Mr Hatzistergos said an estimated 67,000 students in NSW would sit written HSC exams next month and urged them to make use of the Board of Studies NSW website, Students Online.
“Students Online … offers a personalised experience for every Year 12 student,” Mr Hatzistergos said.
“[The website] features HSC syllabuses, past exam papers, practise tests and other support materials, from the one easy location which allows students to customise the site to suit their needs.”
Written HSC examinations begin on October 16 with business studies and some language subjects and finish on November 13. All students will sit for the first English paper on October 17.
