President of the New South Wales Bar Association from 1971 - 1972.

Chancellor of the University of New South Wales from 1976 to 1994.

President of the Australian Security Appeals Tribunal from 1980-1990.

In 1987 he was appointed a Companion in the general Division of the Order of Australia.

Held office in many learned societies including The Australian Academy of Forensic Sciences, The Australian Society for Legal Philosophy and The Law Foundation of New South Wales.

Chairman of the New South Wales Law Reform Commission from 1993 -1996 and the New South Wales Migrant Employment and Qualifications Board from 1992-1995.

Appointed Commissioner, Commission of Inquiry into the Australian Security Intelligence Service 1994-1995 and Chairman, Mediator Accreditation Board, Australian Commercial Disputes Centre in 1994-1996.

Appointed Commander of the Royal Victorian Order in 2000
