LEARNING EXPERIENCE (ACTIVITY)

Examine at the pictures of the governors that can be accessed via the timeline. Choose one Governor and answer the following questions.

1. What is your first impression of the Governor. In other words, what stands out about them?

2. Are they wearing a uniform and, if so, what type of uniform?

3. Describe their appearance

4. What type of image do they present?

5. How do they reflect what life was like at the time?

CCS2.1:
Describes events and actions related to the British colonisation of Australia and assesses changes and consequences. Sequences significant events related to human occupation in Australia.

  • Identifies the consequences for all Australians of the assumption of terra nullius by the British government.

  • Identifies some links between events in the world and the arrival and plight of immigrant groups.
  • Identifies places associated with nationally significant events and people.
  • Look at the timeline of the governors.
  • Choose ONE Governor and look at their biography. Write a speech to present to the class as that Governor.
  • Class can devise questions to ask the Governor.
  • Class can conduct a "Who Am I?"
    Divide class into teams.
    Allow teams time to look at the biographies of the governors. Come back together as a class.
    One member from each team can stand and make statements about who they are e.g.
    I governed from 1901.
    I came from Scotland.

  13. Name the Governor who also tried to dismiss a Premier of New South Wales.
  14. Who is our current Governor?
  15. What was the name of the last Governor to live in Government House?
