I write from Kalimantan where the news is all on the quakes and resulting Tsunamis that hit a number of countries in our region including Thailand, Indonesia, Sri Lanka and India. At present, over 55,000 people have been killed. There is a whole region in the West of Aceh (Sumatra) where around 1 million live where contact was only just this afternoon established. News reports are saying that a possible 21,000 people have been killed in this area alone, which was closest to the epicentre of the quake, then hit with the massive Tsunamis. Over 27,000 people have died in Indonesia alone. People in the activist community here and their family members have been killed by the Tsunamis in Aceh including the director of Walhi Aceh. Reports continue to stream in bearing bad news about our missing frineds and family members. In Indonesia, relief efforts are being coordinated by a number of competant NGOs.
