Teman-teman yang baik An update on the impact of the tsunami on education in northern Sumatra. The figures show a dramatic increase on the figures in the latest Berita Bahasa. The information was supplied by John Davenport. The update is timely for teachers in NSW during Tsunami Awareness Week (14-18 Feb) Leonie Leonie Wittman R/Senior Curriculum Adviser Languages Unit Curriculum K-12 Directorate 3a Smalls Rd Ryde NSW 2112 Tel:9886 7681 Fax: 9886 7160 Email: leonie.wittman at det.nsw.edu.au _____ From: John Davenport [mailto:jdavenport at homemail.com.au] Sent: Monday, 14 February 2005 12:10 PM To: Asia EdNet Subject: [asia-ednet] Tsunami details on education --------------------------------- Asia EdNet Discussion Group --------------------------------- The following are some details about education in North Sumatra after the tsunami: The most recent statistics recorded by the National Department of Education in Indonesia show that more than 3,000 teachers lost their lives. Authorities estimate that about 60,000 students lost their lives in the disaster. There were 914 primary schools, 155 junior high schools, 67 senior high schools and 15 vocational education institutions destroyed in the earthquake and tsunami. About 50% of schools were destroyed. In Indonesia, 243,530 people are listed as dead or missing presumed dead. At this stage with about 50% of school buildings still useable, the Indonesian Government has set up emergency classrooms by installing 2,000 tents. They have also brought about 3,000 new teachers into the area. Students were given counselling before commencing their studies. Obviously massive funding is needed for rebuilding schools and providing equipment for teachers and students to use and for students to replace clothing and books lost in the disaster. The Embassy of Indonesia in Canberra has set up the "Indonesia Tsunami Relief fund". Donations to this general fund may be deposited in the special Commonwealth Bank of Australia Account set up for the purpose. The account number is 062900 10405448. Teachers and students who would like their fund raising money to go directly to schools in Sumatra should send their donation cheques to: Tsunami Relief Education Donations C/- Mr W Yudhi Education and Culture Attache Embassy of Indonesia 8 Darwin Avenue Yarralumla ACT 2600 Donation cheques should be made out to the Embassy of Indonesia. This money will be sent directly to the Education Department in Jakarta and then specifically used to assist schools in the tsunamai distaster areas. Many thanks.
