Subject: This Friday 25th Feb Ed Aspinall on Aceh

his experience as a volunteer aidworker in Aceh to the SISC at 5.30 pm
on Friday 25th February.

Speaker: Edward Aspinall, Lecturer in Southeast Asian Studies at the
University of Sydney,

Topic: The Aceh tsunami, the relief effort and prospects for peace.

Abstract:
Edward Aspinall spent three weeks in Banda Aceh in January where he
assisted local NGOs providing relief to tsunami victims and volunteered
as an interpreter in hospitals. In this presentation he will present his
impressions of the impact of the disaster on Acehnese society, and
provide a picture of the local, national and international relief
efforts. He will also discuss the implications of the disaster for
ongoing efforts to find a peaceful solution to the Aceh conflict, and
point to the implications of the conflict for the relief effort itself
