Book Launch invitation 12 May 2006, 6-7pm at UTS

Dear friends and colleagues,

I would like to invite you to my book launch 'Indonesia in the
Australian Press': A case study of the Soeharto resignation, 21 May
1998', 12nd May 2006, at 6 pm - 7pm followed by refreshments, to be
presented at the University of Technology Sydney. This event is
co-sponsored by the Foreign Correspondents'
Association and the Australian Centre for Independent Journalism,
University of Technology Sydney.

You or your representative's attendance at this book launch would be
most welcome.

The guest speaker is Louise Williams, a senior Australian journalist
with considerable experience in the Asia-Pacific region and
international affairs. She is currently a leader writer for the Sydney
Morning Herald where she has responsibility for editorial comment on a
wide range of international and domestic issues. Louise has won the
Walkley award and the John S. Knight Fellowship for Journalism at
Stanford University. She was the Herald's Jakarta based correspondent
from 1996-1999.

My book presents a case study that illustrates the structure of
international news in the foreign press.
Providing an Indonesian's perspective of the Soeharto resignation, the
book analyses how that event was reported in Australia. This is the
differences between the general values of Australian journalism and
Indonesia's cultural and political systems. The book grew from a thesis
with the same title for my BA
(Honours) degree in Asian studies at the University of Western Sydney,
2003.

Since migrating to Australia in 1995, I have worked as a foreign
correspondent for GATRA the Indonesian weekly news magazine. Ida has
written extensively to a number of publications in Indonesian and
English on the issue of Indonesia and Australia relations. In addition
to working as a journalist, Ida also an Indonesian language teacher at
Macarthur Anglican School and a guest lecturer in the Indonesian studies
department on 'Media and the Press' at the University of Sydney. Prior
to my move to Australia I covered the general elections in the
Philippines after the fall of the Marcos regime, 1992; the releasing of
illegal Indonesian fishermen in the Republic of Palau, South Pacific;
reported the fall of communism in the Czech and Slovakia Republic as
well as the conflict between the Government and Parliament in Moscow,
1994.
