Subject: SISC Seminar 28 July

Dear friends and colleagues

This is to remind you that our next SISC seminar will take place on
Friday 28 July at 6pm when Liz Biok will speak on the topic of West
Papuan refugees.

Speaker: Liz Biok

Liz is a solicitor practicing in migration law and has represented large
numbers of Indonesian asylum seekers. She has a long-term interest in
Indonesian human rights, and monitors Indonesia as a member of the
International Commission of Jurists. She has worked with NGOs both in
Indonesia and East Timor.

Topic: West Papuan refugees and Australia: international law or
politics?

West Papuan asylum seekers have been arriving on Australian territory
since the early 1960s, less than a decade after Australia's involvement
in drafting the Refugees Convention. While Australia has constantly
referred to its proud record in assisting refugees and asylum seekers,
there have been fluctuating responses to the West Papuans, often in
breach of international legal norms. The aim of this paper is to discuss
Australia's response to varying groups of West Papuan asylum seekers
and to reflect on how their arrivals have changed Australian refugee law
and policy.

Time and Date: 6:00 pm Friday 28 July

Venue: University of Technology, Sydney 5C.01.15

This location is Haymarket in Quay Street
