Subject: SISC Seminar 29 September

Dear friends and colleagues

This is to inform you of the SISC (Sydney Indonesia Study Circle)
seminar on Friday 29 September when George Quinn will speak on the three
tombs of Sunan Bonang.

Speaker: Dr George Quinn

Dr Quinn is Deputy Dean of the Faculty of Asian Studies at the
Australian National University and Head of the Southeast Asia Centre in
the Faculty. He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from Gadjah Mada
University, Jogjakarta (1974) and a PhD from the University of Sydney
(1984).

Dr Quinn teaches Indonesian and Javanese, and contributes to courses on
Indonesian literature, Indonesian religion and East Timor. His main
publications are The Novel in Javanese (1992) and The Learners
Dictionary of Today's Indonesian (2001). His current research focuses on
popular Islam in Java, especially sacred places and local pilgrimage in
Java and Madura. From time to time he provides comment on Indonesian
affairs in the Australian mass media.

Topic: The Three Tombs of Sunan Bonang: Saint Veneration, Popular
History and Islam in Java

Sunan Bonang is venerated as one of the semi-legendary Nine Saints (Wali
Songo) who are believed to have been the first disseminators of Islam in
Java in the 1400s and 1500s. He is credited with the authorship of
several mystical texts and is thought to have played a key role in the
establishment of Demak, Java's first Islamic state. Today three places
claim to be his burial place. Two of the three tombs are important
pilgrimage sites and each has its own take on Sunan Bonang's life story
and his powers. In different ways they illuminate how Javanese Muslims
view their past.

Time and Date: 6pm Friday 29 September
