Thanks a lot, Ele williams TOKEN WORD FOR YOGYA! Token Word is a celebration of hybridity, opening its warm arms each month to spoken word, comedy, dance, performance art, music, visual art... anything that speaks to an audience. This month Token Word brings you something very different: a benefit gig to raise much needed funds for earthquake relief work in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. Around 6000 people were killed, 46,000 injured and over 600,000 left homeless in May this year when a high magnitude earthquake hit Yogyakarta. Well known as the 'cultural capital' of Indonesia, many artists, craftspeople, poets and musicians lost not only friends, family members and their homes; but also their places of work and the means to make a living. Now in the Indonesian wet season, funds are urgently needed on the ground in Yogyakarta to continue the rebuilding of this vibrant city. The Indonesian Forum for the Environment- WALHI - has been working in Yogyakarta over the past six months helping survivors rebuild their lives. Having spent over a year working on emergency relief and community empowerment in Aceh and North Sumatra after the 2004 tsunami, WALHI now has extensive experience and networks in post-disaster relief work and is the largest forum of non-government and community-based organisations in Indonesia. Money raised at this month's Token Word will go to support the work of WAHLI in Yogyakarta. So come along for an evening of spoken word, theatre, open mic, music, raffles, and prizes. And if you're lucky we'll throw in a bit of dangdut, too. TOKEN WORD FOR YOGYA! Wednesday, 15th November >From 7:30pm $10 on the door Lan Franchis 144 Cleveland St Chippendale Ps- Feel free to spread the word, bring lots of friends - and buy lots of raffle tickets on the night!!
