We are bringing 17 of their 24 members, and do hope you will see the group at one of their performances listed below. The group includes dancers and musicians, and is lead by the esteemed composer and multi-instrumentalist Ismet Ruchimat. Their music is an exciting and complex fusion of gamelan, Sundanese, as well as western, Latin and African influences. We are currently planning to spend March 12, 13 & 14th in Sydney and are seeking possible school or university performance opportunities during that time. If you can assist, please contact our Project Officer for this tour - Alison Pearl, on 02 66 845 570, or via email:apearl at mullum.com.au <mailto:apearl%40mullum.com.au> I've attached some press releases about the group for your perusal, and would urge you to visit their web site: www.sambasunda.comSambaSunda Itinerary: Thursday, March 8th - Concert at the Judith Wright Centre for Contemporary Arts 420 Brunswick Street, Fortitude Valley, Brisbane Q 4006 Ph: 07 3872 9017 Fx: 07 3872 9001 www.jwcoca.qld.gov.au Saturday, March 10th & Sunday March 11th Concert & Workshop at WOMADelaide Festival, Botanic Gardens, Adelaide Venue Tix 1300 30 40 72 www.womadelaide.com.au Friday, Saturday & Sunday, March 16th - 18th Concert & Workshop, WOMAD NZ, New Plymouth, New Zealand www.womad.co.nz Friday March 23rd & Saturday March 24th Concerts, FINA World Swimming Championships festival, Melbourne 03 9326 7347 www.fina.org/events/WC/Melbourne_2007/index.php SAMBASUNDA what the press says... "Eclectic maestros of fusion ...the result is trully wonderful." - John Clewley, Bangkok Post "High on percussion power, their bamboo gamelan rhythms are itelligent complex structures that feed on the audience energy." - MTV Asia "Subverting Indonesian musical stereotypes with gusto... a curious but compelling maelstrom of Bandung beats and Brazilian samba." - Jane Cornwall, Evening Standard "No other band in South-East Asia has been succesful at fusing traditional with modern without ending up sounding like lounge or easy-listening." - Songlines, Top of The World, March O6 "Dressed in orange and numbering 17, Samba Sunda, from Java, looked and sounded stunning."- Martin Vennard, BBC News "Clashing gongs, lilting drums, sparkling flutes and cantering vibes all somehow manage to create a sound which is unique, modern and imaginatively faithful in its portrayal of the hustle and bustle of a 21st century Indonesian metropolis. (...) Every country and every traditional style of music needs musical pioneers... fortunately for Indonesia, Samba Sunda have taken up the challenge with style and gusto." - Andy Morgan, WOMAD/BBC Radios "Samba Sunda... play elaborate arrangements featuring flutes and loquacious gamelens. Hearing their bizarre version of Brazilian pop is no odder than hearing Kraftwerk Latin style." - John L.
