Subject: First SISC Seminar for 2007 on Aceh

Dear friends and colleagues

This is to inform you that the first SISC (Sydney Indonesia Study
Circle) Public Seminar of the year will take place on March 16 when Ed
Aspinall will update us about developments in Aceh.

Speaker: Dr Ed Aspinall

Edward Aspinall is a fellow in the Department of Political and Social
Change, Research School of Pacific and Asian Studies, Australian
National University. He is currently writing a book on the history of
the Aceh conflict. Amongst other important works, Ed is the author of
Opposing Suharto: Compromise, Resistance and Regime Change in Indonesia.
Stanford University Press, Stanford, 2005 (328 pages) and co-authored
with Harold Crouch,The Peace Process in Aceh: Why it failed, East West
Center Policy Paper series, East West Center, Honolulu, 2003.

Topic: Aceh after the elections.

The presentation will provide an overview of local political
developments and the peace process in Aceh in the wake of the December
2006 election of a new provincial government led by the former GAM
leader, Irwandi Yusuf. It will discuss, among other things, the nature
of the electoral competition, internal dynamics within GAM, the politics
of syariah and the prospects for peace. The presentation will be based
on recent field work in Aceh, including interviews with ex-combatants.

Time and Date: 6pm Friday 16 March

Venue: To be announced.

We look forward to seeing you all there, all welcome!
