Speaker: Dr Ed Aspinall Edward Aspinall is a fellow in the Department of Political and Social Change, Research School of Pacific and Asian Studies, Australian National University. He is currently writing a book on the history of the Aceh conflict. Amongst other important works, Ed is the author of Opposing Suharto: Compromise, Resistance and Regime Change in Indonesia. Stanford University Press, Stanford, 2005 (328 pages) and co-authored with Harold Crouch,The Peace Process in Aceh: Why it failed, East West Center Policy Paper series, East West Center, Honolulu, 2003. Topic: Aceh after the elections. The presentation will provide an overview of local political developments and the peace process in Aceh in the wake of the December 2006 election of a new provincial government led by the former GAM leader, Irwandi Yusuf. It will discuss, among other things, the nature of the electoral competition, internal dynamics within GAM, the politics of syariah and the prospects for peace. The presentation will be based on recent field work in Aceh, including interviews with ex-combatants.
