Last year only 400 Australian students were enrolled to learn
Indonesian. For very good economic and strategic reasons, we'd be mad to
ignore or devalue our relationship with Indonesia. And yet many
Australians still regard it as a violent, unstable military state
inclined to Islamic terrorism. Professor Tim Lindsey argues that our
lack of interest in learning Indonesian is a national scandal.
