Subject: SISC Seminar 27 April

Dear friends and colleagues

This is to inform you that the second SISC (Sydney Indonesia Study
Circle) Public Seminar of the year will take place on April 27 when
Professor Stuart Campbell will discuss the very interesting topic of
Arabic influence on the Indonesian and Malay languages.

Speaker: Professor Stuart Campbell

Professor Stuart Campbell is Pro Vice Chancellor (Learning and Teaching)
at the University of Western Sydney. His academic background is in
languages and linguistics, with a specialisation in translation studies
related to Arabic. His pioneering book Translation into the Second
Language (Longman 1998) has been influential in shifting the emphasis of
translator education. Very recent publications include:

Campbell, Stuart (2007) "Australia's Print Media Model of the Arab World
- a Linguistic Perspective" in Dorothy Kenny and Kyongjoo Ryou (eds)
Across Boundaries: International Perspectives on Translation Studie"
Newcastle upon Tyne: Cambridge Scholars Publishing.

Campbell, Stuart (2006) "Arabic Loanwords in Indonesian/Malay" in
Versteegh, K. (ed.) Encyclopaedia of Arabic Language and Linguistics,
Brill, Leiden, 340-345.

Campbell, Stuart & Wakim Berta (accepted for publication by Target:
International Journal of Translation Studies) "Methodological questions
about translation research: A model to underpin research into the mental
processes of translation"

Qi, Ruying, DiBiase, Bruno & Campbell, Stuart (2006 ) "The transition
from nominal to pronominal person reference in the early language of a
Mandarin-English bilingual child", The International Journal of
Bilingualism. 10.3, 301-329.

Topic: .The influence of Arabic on Indonesian and Malay - linguistics,
historiography, and a scholarly journey.

This talk draws on research that led to two publications (Campbell 1996,
2006) about the way that Arabic has influenced Indonesian and Malay
(IM). It begins with a stocktake of what is known about the reshaping of
Arabic loanwords in IM, and the cultural dimensions of this borrowing.
It then goes on to discuss the importance of sound linguistic evidence
in the study of the history of Islam in the Malay World. The talk ends
with some reflections on a serendipitous scholarly journey that began
with the chance acquisition of an illustrated manuscript from India.
