Subject: [asia-ednet] Project in lombok

Hi there

I'm currently working in Lombok Indonesia and have been asked to help
with
this NGO (non government / not-for-profit organisation). They have a
really
urgent, legitimate need for what is really only a small amount of money
to
do a great job. (See Smile Please document)

I sent a draft version of this to 3 people yesterday. Already received
the
first $100 donation. Every bit helps.

It does seem a terrible waste if money that could help little children
goes
back to the donor, just because no-one has been available to get them to
the
care they need.

If you want more information, just Google yayasan senyum (or Smile
foundation of Bali); I know most people already have commitments, but
if
you can't help, please think who you could pass it on to.

Thanks a heap

Jen

BACKGROUND
Working with medical specialists from Australia, Singapore and
Indonesia,
the Smile Foundation of Bali has extended its mission to include
children
with cleft lip/ cleft palates on the island of Lombok.

At this time, funds are available through the "Lombok 70" Project to
bring
70 children to Bali from Lombok for surgery. The money pays for
transport,
food and accommodation for each child and one parent while in Bali, and
operation fees and charges are also covered. Children with cleft lips
and
palates are sent straight to Bali for surgery, and supported by visiting
doctors from Australia.

More complex cranio-facial problems are photographed and then assessed
in
Bali. Some of these children will go to a special clinic in Bali in
September, with South Australia's cranio-facial specialist, Dr David
David.
Others are sent to SA for surgery there.

CURRENT SITUATION
The funding for this specific Lombok 70 Project finishes in June 2007
and at
the moment the project is at least 30 children short of its target,
because
although the need is there (1 in 600 children born with cleft lip or
palate)
the Bali-based foundation has not had enough people on the ground in
Lombok
to conduct a complete search.

The challenge at the moment is two-fold. Firstly, if these children are
not
found, the current promised funding will go back; worse, it may appear
as if
there is no problem. The real situation is more complex, as more than
half
of Lombok's villages are far from medical care and many mothers/
children
may never have seen a nurse.

Virtually everyone concerned is a volunteer, but the project has
temporarily
employed two local Lombok people to go out to the villages and find
children
who need help, so that these funds will not be wasted.

Already, our two local assistants have found ten children with various
deformities, including cleft lips and palates, and large facial tumours.
They now know, from a number of interviews ranging from tourist street
sellers, to heads of visited villages/ health centres and specialists
from
other health projects, that there are many more children.

The Smile Foundation will use this six-week period to map out the real
need
and then ask AUSAid to fund a much longer period, to help the many
islands
in this province.

SEEKING SPONSORSHIP
The projected running costs for this team of two, including their food,
petrol, photocopying, telephone and accommodation if away from home
base, is
$AU 165.50 per week. Not a lot, but a fortune to this great project.

This work includes:

V Investigative trips across the island looking for children
V Interviews with parents, heads of villages, health officials
V Collection of photograhs and data, recording information
V Help for families with preparation of the complex documentation
the
hospital requires
V Escort for child and parent to the ferry

Please consider sponsoring this project. I am sure when you see the
attached
photos that you will agree it is a very worthwhile endeavour.

All the best

Jen
