Dear colleagues, please check: http://www.sydneyfilmfestival.org/film_details.asp?id=73&fID=82&cID=17 10th June 2.15pm Greater Union George Street 11th June 5.45PM Greater Union George Street Master Indonesian filmmaker Nugroho's spectacular use of dance, gamalayan music and puppet theatre gives form to the first Javanese cinematic opera. The seething passion-play, inspired by the Hindu epic Ramayan , centres around Siti, a beautiful dancer famed for her interpretations of Sita, a young wife stolen from her husband by a king. Siti's life begins to reflect her frequently danced role as she becomes prey to the desires of the rapacious Ludiro, who, in her husband's absence, attempts to seduce her. Both a celebration and a requiem (Nugroho carefully alludes to prevailing issues of violence and inequality), this thoroughly gorgeous film makes fine use of over 400 extras, meticulously crafted sets, stunning cinematography (by Teoh Gay Hian, a shining light in the resurgence of Malaysian cinema) and a contemporary awareness of the language of music video.
