Modern Indonesian Society - A Special Night of 2 Books and 2 Authors
6pm Tuesday 29 September 2009 - Talks at Asia Bookroom

Asia Bookroom and the Asian Studies Association of Australia (ASAA) are delighted to host a very Special Double Indonesian Book Launch. Join us to hear leading scholars Professor Kathryn Robinson and Dr Patrick Guiness talk about their new books on Indonesia at 6pm on Tuesday September 29th at Asia Bookroom. After their talks there will be a chance to meet the authors, get your book signed and browse with light refreshments in hand!

'Gender Islam and Democracy in Indonesia' Professor Robinson's latest book will be launched by Prof  Patricia Spyer, Chair of the Cultural Anthropology of Contemporary Indonesia at Leiden University and Global Distinguished Visiting Professor at New York University's Center for Religion & Media and Department of Anthropology, It explores the relationship between gender, religion and political action in Indonesia, examining the patterns of gender orders that have prevailed in recent history, and demonstrating the different forms of social power this has afforded to women.

Dr Patrick Guinness will talk about his new book "Kampung, Islam and State in Urban Java", to be launched by Ben White, Professor at the Institute of Social Studies, The Hague.

Dr Guinness has spent over 30 years studying the kampung settlements of Yogyakarta is well placed to describe how the nature of community in urban Java changed dramatically during the economic and political transition that followed the fall of the Soeharto regime in Indonesia. His latest book "Kampung, Islam and State in Urban Java" looks at the changes that have taken place and will give us insight into this important group in the Indonesian community.

Kathryn Robinson is Professor in the Dept of Anthropology Research School of Asia Pacific Studies, ANU College of Asia and the Pacific and current president of the Asian Studies Association of Australia.

Patrick Guinness is Reader in Anthropology and Head of the School of Archaeology and Anthropology in the College of Arts and Social Sciences at ANU
