<p><font size=3 face="&quot"><span lang=EN-US style='font-size:12.0pt'>Ten
years after the overthrow of Suharto in 1998 by a student and popular movement,
there are signs of a new movement organising itself and preparing the capacity
to mobilise against the current neo-liberal order. This comes out of both
internal renewal of groups from the 1990s, such as the People's Democratic
Party (PRD), and the creation of new groups, post-1998. Already a first test
wave of mobilisations occurred last May. The new movement is oriented against
the system and not just a dictator, so that forging a unifying ideological
perspective is one the most pressing challenges. <o:p></o:p></span></font></p>
<p><font size=3 face="&quot"><span lang=EN-US style='font-size:12.0pt'>Finishing
<st1:place w:st="on"><st1:country-region w:st="on">Indonesia</st1:country-region></st1:place>'s
revolution combining a program of national liberation and socialism is emerging
as the probable unifying perspective. In the meantime, other
"solutions" are increasingly on offer, including from religious
fundamentalism and pro-business nationalism. This Direct Action forum will
discuss these and a range of other challenges for emerging mass movement in <st1:place
w:st="on"><st1:country-region w:st="on">Indonesia</st1:country-region></st1:place>.
Max lane is author of "Unfinished Nation: Indonesia before and after
Suharto", Verso, 2008; a former contributor to Green Left weekly and now
commentator for Direct Action monthly newspaper and an editorial consultant to
the Asia Pacific Solidarity Network website. He is an Honorary Associate in Indonesian
Studies at the <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:PlaceType w:st="on">University</st1:PlaceType>
