Hello Rappers!

We are a group of Stage 2 (Year 4) students from Penrith Public School. We are from different home classes, but we are all in the same mathematics class. We brainstormed this message in three small groups and Mr McLean, our teacher-librarian, helped us combine our paragraphs into one message.

Our school is on a busy main road, High Street, that passes through Penrith in western Sydney. Penrith is almost at the foot of the Blue Mountains.

There are 400 children at our school. The teachers at this school are very nice to students. We also have a great canteen. Our main building had its 90th birthday this year so we had a Reading Picnic in the playground to celebrate. The building is the same age as Taronga Park Zoo.

We play many sports at this school, such as soccer, cricket and touch football. We have a large, grassed field across the road where we can go at lunchtimes. One year a pair of plovers laid their eggs in the middle of the oval and they chased us away for a whole term!

Every day big black crows visit our playground, and there are also lots of pigeons. In other parts of Penrith, you can sometimes see kangaroos, emus, rainbow lorikeets and kookaburras.

We are looking forward to reading the CBCA shortlisted books, "Home", "The rainbirds" and "Leaf litter" with Mr McLean. Most of us already know these books quite well. We have noticed they are in connection with the environment.

"Environment" is one of our school's four core values! (The others are: "Learning", "Cooperating" and "Respect". We can win Good Ones and Gold Certificates for following the core values and our school rules.) Last Friday was Schools' National Tree Day and two representatives from each class planted new shrubs and bush grasses around the playground. We already had banksias and wattles (symbols of two of our sporting houses) growing, so we made sure to plant some waratahs for the third house.

We look forward to reading your introductions and Rap Responses!

Your new rapper friends,
Year 4 students of Penrith PS
