Book Rap: A book discussion conducted by email

Welcome to the
Book Week - Picture Books rap

 

 

This book rap on the Book Week - Picture Books will be available during Term 3, 2001. It will focus on the 2001 shortlisted picture books.

The Book Week - Picture Books rap is suitable for Stage 3 (Years 5 and 6).
Program and planning material may be adapted for Stage 4 students.

Rap points

These discussion questions guide the book rap. The question for the week is posted to the rap at the beginning of that week by the coordinators. Class groups post their answers and can respond via the rap to other school's replies during the relevant week for that rap point.

Fox written by Margaret Wild and illustrated by Ron Brooks

  1. In which country might this picture book be set?

  2. Look closely at the illustrations and story vocabulary to justify your decision. How do the visual images add meaning to the written text?

  3. What design features has the illustrator Ron Brooks utilised in the layout of Fox? How might these design features impact upon the reader? (ie. What do these design features add to the meaning of the text?)

  4. The author, Margaret Wild, has dealt with several issues and themes throughout this book. What relevance do these issues have for you?

Do you agree with the judges' choice for the best Picture Book of the Year? Justify your opinion by referring to the reviews posted in Rap Point 2 by your own class or group and other schools.

You may also refer to award reports collected from newspapers during Book Week. Share your ideas and feelings with other rappers.

Rap maps

Find examples of maps and tally sheets. Students may use these to identify and locate schools participating in the book rap. Use these or create your own based on ideas from these examples.
