Term 3 Week 3: Week beginning 5 August 2002

Rap point:

This rap point requires you and your class to consider the attributes athletes need to succeed in their chosen sport, particularly at an elite level.

Working through the rap task will help your class develop a list of attributes, that is qualities or characteristics, that successful sportspeople may display. Write a job description for a successful sportsperson in your favourite sport that uses these general attributes, but also includes attributes that are specific for that sport.

Sequence of rap points Teaching notes
RAP TASK:
As a class, develop a mind map to record your ideas about the attributes, qualities or characteristics of a successful sportsperson.
As a whole class, ask the students to brainstorm and record as a mind map the qualities or characteristics required by a sportsperson. This is a general set of attributes and characteristics that might apply to range of sports or physical activities.

Mind Map
Write a job description for a successful sportsperson in your favourite sport that uses these general attributes, but also includes attributes that are specific for that sport. Use the ideas and language from the brainstorm if they are attributes that are needed for success in your sport. For ideas on what may be included in a position criteria, use the classifieds in newspapers.  Using newspaper classifieds examine the features of a job advertisement. These could include:
  • the structure of the advertisement
  • the language used.

After identifying these features, ask the students to develop an advertisement for a position as a successful sportsperson in a sport of their choice. Encourage the students to use some of the ideas and language identified in the class brainstorm and develop some of their own ideas and attributes that are specific to the sport they have chosen.

It may be useful to develop a scaffold for students that indicates the key points, sequence of parts and sentence beginnings in the job description. This will assist in the planning and writing processes.

For example:

       (Sport)      requires a talented

player to _______________________.

This player or athlete must have  ______________________________.

For example:

Position: Rugby Union Wallaby

Position criteria:

Australian Rugby Union requires an elite rugby union player to be part of a very successful team in the lead up to next year’s World Cup. This player must have very good rugby skills such as kicking, passing and be good in both defence and attack. The successful player needs to a highly successful team member of a current Super 12 team and be willing to travel. Previous experience against players from New Zealand and South Africa would be an advantage.

Ask the students to share their advertisements with the rest of the class. As each student reads their advertisement, ask the class to identify the attributes required for each position. Get the class to vote to decide on five advertisements that will be sent to the rap.

Once the final text has been edited by the teacher, ask a Rap Rep to post the advertisements to the rap.
