Rap point 2

Term 3, Week 2: Week beginning 29 July 2002

This rap point requires you and your class to answer the following questions.

Who are some of the Australian athletes competing at the Commonwealth Games?
Why do they enjoy playing games and sports?
What are some of the benefits of participating in games and sports?

Working through the rap task will help you to answer the questions and develop more of your own.

Rap task

Complete the following task in order to answer the questions above.

There are over 750 athletes, representing over 30 sports with New South Wales Institute of Sport (NSWIS) scholarships. These athletes are the best at what they do. Many are the best in Australia and some are the best in the world.

Why do they put so much time and effort into their sports?

As part of this rap, you have the opportunity to interact via email with seven athletes from the NSWIS. These seven athletes are currently representing Australia at the Commonwealth Games. See further down the page for their names and sports.

1. In small groups, develop a profile of each athlete. As you discover interesting fact(s) on each athlete, develop your own athlete profile. This could be in the form of a:

  • multimedia presentation (e.g. PowerPoint or Kidpix)
  • poster presentation
  • information sheet
  • hanging mobile
  • other?

2. Develop a range of questions that you would like to ask each athlete in order to find out more information about them. For example, what they enjoy most about playing sport or about participating in a particular event, what are some of the physical benefits, health benefits, and social benefits? You may also look at what sports and physical activities they will be or would like to be involved in once their competitive careers are over.

You may need to gather information for these profiles from a number of sources, for example:

  • resources that are in your school library
  • discussions with the athletes involved in the rap.

Send a message to all rappers sharing a couple of questions you would like to ask each athlete. A selection of these will be answered for you next week.
