SUGGESTED ACTIVITIES FOR RESPONDING TO RAP POINT 2
Activity 1: First impressions
- Read Chapter 1 of Bad eggs aloud to the class.
- Discuss: What is this book about? Where does the action take place? Can the written text stand alone? What patterns or techniques do you notice? What do we know about the characters? TS3.1.
- Read Chapter 1 again, allowing the students to view the illustrations.
- Discuss: Do the illustrations add information not found in the written text? What does the illustrator choose to depict in relation to the written text on each page? Does each illustration take place before, during or after the events in the written text? Do the illustrations give us the characters’ perspectives on events, or do they allow the reader to experience the events from the outside looking in? RS3.6.
Activity 2: How has the author used words to portray humour?
- Revisit Chapter 1 List all the words associated with eggs. Discuss how the author has used these words to create humour. For example, She was ready to crack (p. 10) is a play on words and has two meanings. Which meaning did the author intend? WS3.13 & TS3.4.

Activity 3: Ordinary words can be used in eggstraordinary ways to create humour
- Read the book as a class, or in small groups. Share student responses to the humour provided by the many puns and supporting illustrations.RS3.6 & RS3.7 Refer to Rap sheet 8 for examples and an activity on Double meanings, then send students’ illustrated jokes, riddles or humorous sayings to Rap Coordinator, Cath.Keane

Activity 4: Optional Eggstra
- If you have time, it would be fun to perform a reader’s theatre or play based on Bad eggs. RS3.8.
Posting response to Rap point 2
- prepare the response to Rap point 2 with the clas
- student/s (rap representative) type the response, edit and save
- teacher facilitates the students/s use of the word processor and email programs
- rap rep/s send the response to Rap point 2 once the teacher has approved the final text.
