Picturing books
The deconstruction of picture book elements is clearly described in this informative site. Using picture books displays large and vibrant covers, with explanations of terms and the basic elements of visual design, story design, and illustration. These ideas are expanded in Palette, where styles, techniques, and design elements, are comprehensively explained. Within Links, the list of Illustrators and authors is a fascinating visual and auditory journey through clever and creative authorial web sites. Teachers will recognise many names here, such as Babette Cole, Greg Tang, Mem Fox, and Dr. Seuss. Makers of and readers of picture books will learn much from this enthusiastically structured resource, which is maintained by a lover of the genre. There are many links to other resources; the usefulness of these sites would need to be verified by teachers. C. Thomas

The on-line visual literacy project
The result of a university course entitled The principles of visual literacy, this site presents information about the significance of visual awareness as a key element to communication. The site opens with an animated graphic requiring Quicktime. A succinct, general introduction to visual literacy follows listing basic elements: Dot; Line; Shape; Direction; Texture; Hue; Saturation; Value; Scale; Dimension; and Motion. Each is given a detailed description and is well supported by graphics and animated images drawn from art, motion pictures, print advertising and other media. For each page, References provides a comprehensive list of textand image sources. Teachers will find this site invaluable in developing an understanding of the various elements of the composition of graphics, and their significance in positioning viewers in a particular way. T. Traveling in new directions: teaching non-linear picture books
A short academic article extolling the value of non-linear picture books, this resource contains practical advice and tools for English teachers. The site examines the characteristics and categories of these texts, and offers useful teaching strategies, such as manipulating existing student knowledge and use of non-linear electronic worlds. It shows how teachers can actively help students deal with the gaps in meaning, the seemingly superfluous information, and ambiguity of these non- traditional narratives. A short analysis of Trouble with trolls, Simple Simon, and Granpa, will help engender an awareness of difference, and aid appreciation of the highly imaginative nature of non-linear texts. The article, referenced with academic research and picture books, is invaluable for Stage 6 students working with picture books for their Major Work. C. Thomas
