Welcome to the Identity: Sharing our stories rap
Rap: an online discussion

Identity: Sharing our stories is available in Term 2, 2008. The rap supports Aboriginal studies across key learning areas and is suitable for Stages 3 and 4 (Years 5, 6, 7 and 8). It focuses on Stage 3 and Stage 4 syllabus outcomes in English, HSIE and PDHPE.

This rap explores cultural factors affecting identity, with Program and planning ideas which can provide additional support and resources for teaching units such as:

This rap features Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander voices reflecting on identity, belonging, family and how each student can aim for the stars. Students from Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal backgrounds will read short factual texts by Aboriginal authors and then write about:

  • Where my family comes from (the importance of cultural background and belonging)
  • Famous people who inspire me (qualities which build a strong identity and positive actions)
  • Someone who inspires me to be the best I can be (role of a mentor who believes in us)
  • What I want to be when I grow up (aim for the stars, goals, overcoming obstacles)

The rap discussion focuses on the following texts. Please print these out for your students to read and discuss each week

For Rap point 1: My People, my place
For Rap point 2: Extracts from Deadly Vibe magazine
For Rap point 3: Respect – Encouragement – Action
For Rap point 4: Strong Identity – Proud future
