Term 2, Week 9: week beginning 23 June, 2008

Read and enjoy the text, Strong Identity Proud future in order to respond to Rap point 4. During this week we will reflect on and respond to the following questions:

  • When you are an adult, how do you want your family life to be? Would you like children? What sort of a parent or carer would you like to be?

  • What sort of a job would you like to have? To achieve this goal, what steps will you need to take?

  • What are your wishes for the 21st century? Make a wish list of 5 items for the world!

Teaching focus

To build a strong identity we need to plan a proud future for ourselves. Giving something back to our community is something to be proud of; using our natural talents is something to be proud of; working hard is something to be proud of. Being able to keep going when times get tough is something to be proud of too. To build a strong identity, we need to know where we come from, what we are doing and where we are going.

Activity 1: Response to text

As a class, discuss the ideas in Strong Identity Proud future. Discuss with the class the teaching focus ideas.

Activity 2: Students discuss and record their dreams for their future family

  • When you are an adult, how do you want your family life to be?

  • Would you like children? What sort of a parent or carer would you like to be?

Rap sheet 13 can assist with this activity.

Activity 3: Students discuss and record their dreams for a career

  • What sort of a job would you like to have? To achieve this goal, what steps will you need to take?

Rap sheet 14 and Rap sheet 15 can assist with this activity.

Activity 4: Students discuss and record their hopes for the 21st century

  • What are your wishes for the 21st century? Make a wish list of 5 items for the world!

Rap sheet 16 can assist with this activity. As a class, decide on which 5 things from those mentioned in class discussion that they would like to include in their post to the rap. Discuss their reasons for selecting their final five.

Alternative activity 4 response: 21st century Utopia posters

As an alternative to a written response to the rap blog, students could create posters/pictures/illustrations called 21st century Utopia in response to their reading of the text and class discussion. The class would select one of these to upload to the blog, accompanied by paragraph about what is so good (environmentally, technologically, socially) about the world portrayed by the picture.

Activity 5: Individual student writing – Optional

Students write about My dreams for the future OR My wish list for the 21st century, for a class magazine to be published at the end of the rap. The rap writers Maureen, Daphne and Lizzie will read the magazines and send a response to each class.

Posting response to Rap point 4

As a class, send a message including the kinds of jobs that students in their class would like to do as adults, their 5 class wishes for the 21 century, indicating the reason why they chose this five.

  • prepare the response to Rap point 4 with the class
  • student/s (rap representative) word process the response, edit and save
  • teacher facilitates the student/s use of the word processor and blogging procedures to post the response to Rap point 4 once the teacher has approved the final text.
